I’m moving to New York, buy a car?
I’m moving to either Manhattan, New York or to Brooklyn, New York to pursue a career in fashion photography.
My family is supportive but skeptical. They think I should buy a car, and don’t want me to get “Mugged” while riding the subway or bus. And they keep complaining a taxi is expensive.
But traffic is awful in New York, and I don’t want to pay $50 grand on a car that’ll eventually get in a wreck since I come from Kansas, a state where there’s not an incredible amount of traffic and people.
So should i buy a car to keep my family reassured that I’ll be safe?

New York City as a whole has a robbery rate of 2.4 incidents per 1,000 residents. That is more than twice as high as Kansas’s robbery rate, so while it is more of a problem here, it isn’t too much more of a problem.
But you are still safer in New York City, especially if you do not drive a car. In 2010, we had 532 murders out of a population of 8.5 million people. In Kansas, y’all had 119 murders, out of a population of 2.8 million. But Kansas also had about 480 auto-related deaths last year. NYC had 150 auto related deaths. So last year, Kansas had 600 auto/murder deaths and NYC had 680 auto/murder deaths. That makes Kansas’s auto/murder death rate 3 times as high as NYC’s!
All I am trying to say is that the crime and death in NYC is much, much lower than most places and to concern yourself about it to the point that you will buy a car and incur all of those expenses and have to deal with auto theft, parking tickets and digging out the car in the snow is a bit over doing it. Scrap the car, stick with the bus or subway. With all that money you are saving from not having a car, you can afford to take a taxi every once in a while. Besides, coming back from that late night party, you want to be drunk driving after those appletini’s or be safe about things and take a taxi?
